Holy Week at St. John's--Palms, Fish, Thorns, and Resurrectiion

4/1/2013

St. John's followed the story of Holy Week, from the joy of Palm Sunday through the agony of Good Friday to the celebration of Easter.

Palm Sunday, March 24:  At the beginning of the 10 am service,  the parishioners entered the nave of the church waving palms and singing "All Glory, Laud, and Honor."  Then, in place of the usual reading of the Gospel, we read the roles of those who lived the Passion story.

Maundy Thursday, March 28:  We started with a simple Loaves and Fishes meal of fish, coleslaw, rolls, and a beverage at 6:30 pm in the undercroft.  After the meal, we took part in a short Eucharistic service at our tables, during which we offered one another the bread and the wine.  The conclusion of the service took place in the nave of the church, where we stripped the altar, draped the cross, and placed a bundle of thorns on the altar.

Good Friday, March 29:  The Good Friday liturgy was offered at 12 noon and 7 pm.

Holy Saturday, March 30:  Parishioners and Altar Guild members gathered from 10 am to 1 pm to decorate the church for Easter.

Easter Sunday, March 31:  Parishioners celebrated the Resurrection with hymns and joy at both the 8 am and 10 am services.  At the 10 am service children flowered a cross and gathered at the front of the church for a children's message.  An Easter egg hunt and a special Easter fellowship hour followed..
